I am in favor of updating the web site and increasing the fee minimally. However, I feel it is the job of the universities to educate our future APE teachers. If we want to increase the number of individuals becoming CAPE certified that we should be spending more time and if necessary money get state certification in those states that currently do not. To properly train a APE professional it takes 24-30 hours of university course work. For use to have someone get a PE degree with one three hour class and then do five or six modules on-line and say they are properly trained in APE is an insalt to the profession. The law says that special education students are to be taught by highly trained teachers. I think we should be working with APAC in AAHPERD to have a highly trained APE teacher recognized. These individuals should have beyond the typical 3 hour courses in adapted pe and motor development, course work in assessment, adapted sports, adapted aquatics, special events, six additional hours of methods courses and 200 hours of practicum under the supervision of an adapted pe specialist with CAPE. For us to undermine the excellent certification/licensures of Minnesota and California would be a shame. What Minnesota has going with their Licensure, teaching of APE and adapted sports programs should be where we are pushing all of our states. WE need to be identifying parents willing to sue states to get this type of program going and supporting them with all the information we can. With the court action in Maryland, the state of Maryland requiring schools to incorporate adapted sports into their schools, the high school federation meeting in Annapolis this summer recommending states incorporate adapted sports into their state high school athletic associations, we should be pushing hard for high standards in APE. WE should not be willing to certify someone with their taking a 3 hour course and 5 modules on-line.
