I support APENS as one resource for the preparation of persons in the field of adapted physical education. I also support the "highly qualified adapted physical education teacher" position paper developed by AAPAR. I also support the recommendations of the AAHPERD-NCPERID Task Force on Professional Preparation in Adapted Physical Education. There is a vast discrepany between APENS and these other orientations. The position paper and task force recommends at least 12 semester hours for the preparation of persons in adapted physical education. APENS finds it acceptable to have taken a minimum of a 3 credit course in adapted physical education in attaining adapted physical education certification. Further, the current APENS certification depends heavily on the successful completion of a written exam and certifies and individual without adequate observation of teaching and/or consulting competencies. i believe that the current minimal criteria for the exam currently contributes to and will continue to provide a disservice to the field. There is also reason to be concerned about the accountability associated with online procedures for test taking. Concerns such as these require an assessment of and by the NCPERID in regard to one of its chief missions, the promotion of quality professional preparation.
